I wasn't a fan of his until one day I copped for the job of liaison lineman when his morning show was done as an outside broadcast from the Savoy at Blackpool (he was compere for the Miss UK that year). I had not realized that his "script" was a list of the records to be played and a pile of "readers letters", all the chat was off the cuff, always humorous, never offensive and with a gentle whimsy that is probably irreplaceable. And, unlike some BBC early morning presenters, he could read the time off a clock. The world is a poorer place for his loss.
