Hi Mayhem,
heres a small article about the Smit Nederland:
SMIT NEDERLAND, the workhorse tug of the Smit tug company, Rotterdam,
Netherland. First model, the Smit Nederland, was built in 1979 for the
Smit Internationale Havensleepdienst BV of Rotterdam. Its length is 28,4
meters, and the displacement is 193 tons. With two 900 HP engines each,
1800 HP total, and twin screws, it is designed especially to handle large
ships in small harbours. The winch has a steel wire of 500 meters, and the
speed is 12 knots. Later she was followed by additional sisters, Smit
Frankrijk, Smit Sweden, Smit Denemarken, etc. The excellent construction,
and the good manoeuvrability , will keep this workhorses in duty for many,
many years further in the future.
I have supplied my model with an extra radar. It is powered by two Mabuchi
550 motors, and a Futaba 2 channel radio control.
My model is old now, one of my first constructions, a gift for my
confirmation day. But as the real ship, she is a real workhorse, that has
tugged my 4 year old daughter in an inflatable boat easily, and she has
served as an ice breaker in the small lakes in the winter mornings. In the
future, I'll give her a an upgrade, with water guns, and new paint.
