Hi all,

I'm getting ready to put the skins on my 1/9th scale 43ft RSL, I was going to do the scale double diagonal plank thing but have decided to do the skinning in four  seperate pieces (i.e 2 bottoms 2 sides!), I'm just wondering which is the best adhesive to use  and whether to start from the bow and work backwards or vice versa?

All input welcome

Many thanks

For wood on wood, you cannot beat PVA glue.  It will need clamping and leaving overnight but it will confidently hold it's grip.

Thanks for that Ken, I remember being told many moons ago that the slower the setting time the stronger the bond, I guess thats true with PVA, I've got EVo resin W, presume thats the best to use?

Cheers

For wood to wood I reckon you can't beat Aliphatic.

I must agree with Colin here..... O0

Polyurathane aliphatic glue is 100%  water proof when cured & 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000  times superior to PVA in damp conditions ......  :-))

Another vote for Aliphatic here, After many years of using PVA I've now moved over to it completely, as for the sort of jobs we do it's a far superior product. Just another example of the way that glue technology has moved forward I suppose.

I've just done a boat using precisely the same building technique that you're about to and it worked a treat... waterproof, tough and nicely sandable and has a similar 'feel' to PVA when you're working with it, but I like the faster grip you get .

I stand corrected.  I thought Aliphhatic was know as PVA.   :embarrassed:  because that's the stuff I use.

Having read Derek's treatise recommended above, I am a little wiser, but not much.   ok2

Anyway, I think you get the idea Dave J

PVA is now generally considered to be stuff like Evo Stik exterior wood glue which works OK but Aliphatic is a big improvement while the more expensive Super Phatic from Deluxe Materials is a sort of woodworking equivalent of superglue but still has water clean up.

How about Gorrilla glue rather messy on the hands but what a strong bond

Hi ya there Dave

ResinW or Evostik exterior/pva glue will do okay for bonding the hull skin to the bulkheads, just remember - seal the exterior skin with something like a good coating of paint.  Or, for a better job - finishing Zepoxy.   I have a few hulls I have built using ResinW, PVA glue which has been about for 30-40 year and they havent fallen apart yet - YET I SAY :-) only time it does fall aprt (the model) is when it his the pond side with full belt - or dropped by Riggers :-) or hoyed in by me isnt that right Dicky. %) %)

Thanks for that John, I might as well use the evo resin w, as you say yours have been 'hoyed in' and dropped etc so i'm sure it can withstand any (if any) abuse I can give it!!!!!!

Was going to coat the exterior with sanding sealer until I get a super smooth finish then apply paint via an airbrush for hopefully a flawless finish, hope shes still about in 30-40 years time as yours are!!!!

All the best

Where can you get Polyurathane aliphatic glue in the UK in decent size bottles?

I think there is more than one type of Gorilla glue. The variety most people are dsescribing is the one which has a foaming gap filling action. This is quite different to normal Aliphatic glue which is simply a thin liquid. which penetrates the wood.

There is Aliphatic PVA, which is usually yellow in colour, and snads nicely unlike normal PVA which tends to remain a bit chewy in my experience.
