Although not a build thread, as yet, this is to introduce, those who may be interested, to Ingersoll. She began her illustrious career as a standard US Navy Fletcher -class destroyer, DD-652. After numerous successful patrols, she was drydocked to ungergo a number of refits in order for her to better serve the Cold War effort. Her number 3 5"-38 deck gun was removed and replaced with a twin 3"-50-cal. anti-aircraft gun, along with 2 additional 3"-50s' which replaced the 40-mm gun mounts on either side of the rear funnel. The 5-tube torpedo launchers were removed, as well, and replaced with twin-torpedo tubes of a more modern type of torpedo. All of her remaining 20mm and 40mm guns were also removed. The 40mm gun mounts on either side of the bridge were replaced with hedgehog launchers, as well. Other upgrades were made to her radars and she was outfitted with a tripod main mast. All depth charge racks and throwers were also removed. The only depth charge rack remaining was on the starboard side of her fantail. She also carried no life rafts, other than the whaleboat type lifeboats!

To post pictures click on 'Attachments and other options' below the text area and then 'choose file' under the word Attach. Navigate to your required picture and select it. Repeat for further pictures. Just watch the size most pictures from a camera will be too big and need reducing.

Hi Gary, she certainly came out of the dry dock a sleeker ship! The bridge area seems lower and less top heavy; that must have helped with stability.

I look forward to your build, seeing another project based on that versatile 'Blue Devil' hull.

At present, I have the three superstructure elements assembled and have attached stanchions and railings. None of the topside parts are adhered yet, as I want to do a bit more detailing prior to painting them. They appear a bit "rough" right now, but are well on their way to being what I envision as, at least somewhat, befitting of her prototype!! Hah!!

I am currently working on the main deck, filling unwanted holes, and just generally smoothing the surface of the "oopsies" I made while modding it! Will post photos shortly!!

Just a few photos of my Ingersolls' superstructure sections in their "less-than-finished" stages!! Hah!!
The railing stanchions are Caldercraft and purchased from Croppers Models in the UK. 10mm in height.

OOps!!

The railings are made from .015" (roughly ,375mm) brass rod!
Very easy to work with, and it forms well to irregular curves and angles!

Thanks, but don't hold your breath. We are trying to move house and everything is in boxes now. Hopefully I might get back on it at the end of the year.

A question to my fellow Fletcher modelers...

Looking at the photo of Ingersoll which I posted, there are 2 weapons mounted on either side of the bridge. The forward weapon is a hedgehog launcher, but the item just a bit aft of it is one that I cannot identify. It looks to be mounted in a way that will allow it to hinge up and down, and I am thinking it may be something akin to ASROC??? If anyone would have possible knowledge of it, would very much appreciate your input. In reading up on the Ingersolls post-war refits, there is no mention of ASROC, but, like the hedgehogs, I would guess that it is also an anti-submarine weapon of some sort!!??

Looking good Gary! I like the bridgework very much and reckon those railings should resist all incoming knocks and thuds.

Re your query, It definitely looks tilted ruling out the ubiquitous locker.

I take it, it the two cabinets either side of the launchers - storage boxes for the hegdehogs perhaps - angled for easy removal or stowage.

I have made up a couple such items from some square basswood, and covered them with
.25mm thick plastic sheet. The crazy old Yank has even scribed some lines on them to represent
individual compartments!! Yah just cannot fix "crazy", eh!! Hah!!
