Hi all I have been wanting to build a Pelagic Trawler for quite a number of years but unfortunately, I was unable to get a hull at the scale that I liked. I contacted Bill Wood as I knew he had a mould for the Girl Stephanie at 1/25th but unfortunately, he no longer had the mould, So I decided the only thing left was to build my own plug.

After giving it some thought I have decided to try and make my own mould.

Great start Brian, I'm looking and learning from you, my long term plan is also to build a trawler but at 1/48 scale which will end up just a smidgen under 6ft.
I'll put up a build log once I get it underway. In the meantime I'll happily tag along here

This should be fun. 1/25 will be pretty big – I see you have the 25kg ballast already, in the corner.

Steve the trawler i am building is 1/60th

Great news Ray I look forward to your build, the plug i am making is for the PELAGIC TRAWLER RESEARCH LK 62 I am building at 1/60 scale, this will make the model Length 1330mm Beam 270mm The actual size is Length 79.8Mt Beam 16.2Mt. I will be attempting for the first time to make a mould to hopefully produce the hull if all goes well

The plugs I have made in the past have been plank on frame, this method takes quite a while so looking at different ways to make plugs I decided on
closed foam between the frames.

Cheers Brian, I don't know if you can recall - I bought the plans back in 2011 for the Fairtry I. She was a stern trawler / factory freezer, processing the catch at sea.
Anyway, I hope to make a start on it this coming winter.

So nice to see the Master at work again if anything just me modelling and try to inprouth to make the next one better then the last it's watching your skill thank you Brian.

Thank you Howard, it will be a totally new ball game when i start on the mould. I have just spent over £300 on materials but never mind if it all goes pair shaped i can always make the moulds into flower pot containers.

More sanding, then primer added to show any blemishes before it gets the ok

You've chosen another very interesting subject to model Brian, that stern gantry will be a real challenge!.
However, first things first, creating the mould - and you're well on the way to starting that.

Yes Ray you are right I think this build will give me a few headache's, I will post photos on the mould construction when it gets under way.
[/size]As you have no doubt seen I am doing mods on my tug hull, I am going to try and make a mould of her before I ruin the trawler plug.
[/size]While this is all going on I have another project going on in the back ground, she is a 1/30 scale shelter deck trawler of the OUR LASS 3

That's the keel Martin , all the bigger boats are built with that step in them now , the box keel is filled with lead to keep the inside of the hull clear for equipment and , in the case of the Research , bigger tanks for holding fish. These tank boats all have 12 large refrigerated sea water tanks to hold Herring/Mackerel/Blue Whiting , normal ratio is 40% water 60% fish and the water is recirculated to keep the fish fresh.
Engine room is large on these boats so they have the space for huge chilling units to keep the fish fresh.

^^ Tanks kept empty in harbour , tanks filled with water so it can be chilled only once they are out of the harbour

I have been given lots of info on her. Really looking forward to this build I want to totally build her from scratch from the plans, the plug is taking shape I hope every thing goes as well with the mould and making the hull.

Nothing stopping me know, after getting the mould off the Stvens Arctic plug with a little friendly persuasion, I have started to wax up the Trawler plug. up to now she has had 8 coats of wax, hopefully today I will be putting on the gel coat then its first glass coat.

Just a small update on the plug, port side glassed and former remove ready for glassing starboard side
