Evening all


After a 7 hour round trip I have bought myself a part built Fleetscale Type 45 destroyer, previous owner had decided it was to big to handle so chopped in half, bulkheads at the ends and the two halves have 1/2 inch stainless rods to marry up and a clamp to secure in the hull, never really thought of doing it this way but am in two minds whether to leave as is or bolt the two together, fill and have as one hull, my only worry is when it is joined there is a gap where the hull joins, have others done it this way?

The joint will eventually wear and then flex but it depends on the fit.

I thought that to be fair, I was thinking four 10mm bolts and bolt together thinking it wouldn’t move but like you say it may, my other option would be to fettle and sand the two bulkheads so they married almost perfectly, tough job but possible I suppose?

Do you need to split the hull for transport, the most wear is then launching and recovering as that is when the joint suffers most stress.

At just over 2mtr length  it would be ideal if kept has two halves I suppose, didn’t want the joint look a dogs dinner though, plus all paint has got to be stripped and would be easier to work on.

It might reduce the stresses if you can build her up in the water then fit batteries and ballast.

hes built a few more ships with hull joins and having seen them at shows the joint is barely noticeable

I have decided to keep the Type 45 as two halves for ease of stirring and transporting, all has been stripped down back to fibre glass and I have started to etch prime, previous owner who started the build had not used primer so didn’t take to long to strip back. New decks have been made and in the process of fitting, filling and sanding.

HI there yes ive built a few ship with a hull jiont an they look fairly reasnonable an i just fitted 4 bolts glued in the front section an then the bolts slide through brass sleves to stop wear an then just tightin both hulls togeather by butterfly nuts an its a fairly easy way an the bolt holes are all above the W/L AN ELETRICS are computer plug also fitted into the hull to carry power to the rearhull section an yes lookin at how the other gent treid to jion up the hull is wow why the big holes below the W/L an did it leak when in the water as to me i cant see how this idea worked but i hope you can get a better idea of jioning the hull an you are quite welcome to copy my idea if you want if it helps you sir

The holes you see are the ends of heavy gauge aluminum tubes set inside the hull, these have end caps glued on so no water passes into the hull, there are three aluminum rods that slide into one half and the other half of the hull slides onto these, once together there is a large lever clamp inside the hull that pulls the two tight, watertight.
Couple of pics from today, new rad mounts made and some filling and sanding done to the main tower before a coat of paint..

Made the internal hanger walls/deck, 2nd Lynx heli will be stored in here. Will add some lighting in there at some point, the walls and deck are all removable as the shaft oilers are underneath.

I will change the title of this thread as I will probably post updates as I progress the build, couple more pics as I have to take outside to turn the ship round and take back in the workshop, have to work on one side at a time..

Far to wet and damp today in the garage so knocked up a 72 scale Merlin, will make two as one will be blades folded for in the hanger, eyes not what they used to be so had to leave some decals off..

A little more done on the 72 today, for some reason the rear deck had popped up, the epoxy didn’t hold it so had to remove and refit.

Are you sure those bilge keels are right? They look very big to me. Might be an idea to find some photos of T45's in dry dock to check. A lot easier to take some off now than when finished I'd say. Otherwise it's a very impressive build! Have you thought of screwing that flightdeck down? I assume the inside of the hull has strip wood around the edges? Screw then fill then paint!
