Title: Proops Brothers
Post by: Nemo on May 08, 2016, 10:14:55 pm
This website may be known to many on here, but I have just discovered it. A Mayhem search on the name produced no result so here it is. An ideal site for those looking for many things that we need including. lots of gears, cogs etc.

Wow. I used them in my model engineering days but I'd forgotten them since. Nice to see they are still going.

Blimey, I got stuff from them in the 1960s, glad they are still around, thanks for the link.

I ordered a small guillotine today and they promise to post orders by 12 noon if you order in the morning - most should arrive next day. Good, quick service. O0

I remember them at the shows, theirs stand was always crowded 3 or 4 deep!

Yes I was looking at that guillotine, could be very useful for a tenner. And I've just realized I bought my digital caliper from them.  %%

Wandering up and down the new display area at Proops recently (they are 10 minutes away here in Leicester),
I was pleasantly suprised by the amount of products stocked, managed to placate SWMBO with their
jewellery making supplies!

Proops buisness evolved into online sales, but behind the scenes the staff, products and good old fashioned 'service'
thankfully still exists.

I have no connection with the company - just a happy punter passing on helpful info.

Just my opinion, nothing to do with any company,    but   , beware the guillotine, I bought that same self product and found it unable to snip through lolly pop sticks, not that good even at wood veneer as it tended to flex about due to its plastic construction. As I say just my opinion from my humble experience.

I think that expecting it to slice through a lolly stick might have been asking too much of it. I have one and find it very useful indeed for thin stripwood for planking and cutting through various types of plastic strip and strips of plasticard.

It is only really intended for light jobs but within that limitation it is very effective.

I got a digital caliper from Proops Brothers E-bay shop, they have a very diverse range of products there at reasonable prices, that together with good service is probably why they have been around so long, I bet they even have "fork handles"  %% %%

Crikey I did not realise they were still going, I still have some forceps I brought from them at an engineering show in the eighties. They used to have a very large selection of weird and wonderful medical instruments, I would look at them and think "what the hell does that do"

I used to go to their shop in the Tottenham Court Rd years ago - still have the tweezers I bought there.

Ah, the Tottenham Court Road! Lasky's, Morgan Cameras, and many more; a great hunting ground, especially for government surplus.

And wasn't there a company called Green's or Green something that did similar stuff?

If you look in the 'Wants and Swaps' section, you will notice recently that I was seeking a Crailcraft motor - and it was an online link to one that led me to Proops. I phoned them and the lady answering said they only had one (not the one I required %)) and it was bought in a job lot and had been hanging around for ages. She was not only very funny but helpful and we had a nice chat for about 5 mins or so, making me feel like I would not be surprised if she offered me some 'P's or fork handles instead Joe! O0
Bob.
BTW, the guillotine 'got' me within minutes and despite taking great care I just scraped that lethal blade with a knuckle and out came the fist-aid box - again! I agree with above comments, I was a bit disappointed after a trial cut and quickly realised that it is useful for light use only - and could not cut more than about 1mm stripwwod - and that was a struggle!
