Electrics and where to put them
« on: May 28, 2008, 10:06:59 pm »

I was wondering where to put my ESC, Receiver and Fuse, with reference to vibration and / or any other unbeknown hazard?  (please keep it clean) {-)

My first cunning plan is to Velcro them to a battery; reasons being its big and heavy.  My second plan was to fix a bit of ply to the sides of the Hull and screw them to these.
The batteries will be on their sides end on and in parallel, firmly affixed, yet removable for recharging.

Where do you guys put yours?

regards
Gary :)
PS Is it OK to "tape" up excess wire, or will it cause excessive heat?

Hi,

Well my ten Penney is I have 3 ESC's mounted together but away from my batteries, (SLA's) never did like putting heat near a Lead Acid Battery.

then my Rec is away from the ESC's (other end of batteries) then it has a rubber casing moulded around it (busted one 9ch rec with vibration)

just my way of doing things .

Thanks Catengineman.
After reading a thread on batteries and hydrogen gas, I think as you say; heat, and batteries don't mix.  I am leaning towards plan two, I just didn't want a spaghetti junction of wires.  (like I've got with my TV etc and PC)
Can you purchase the rubber casing for the receiver?

I made the rubber surround out of the backing from a mouse mat that had seen better days

GarM,
There are 2 schools of thought about radio installation.
One is to keep batteries, Speed Controllers and receiver as far apart as possible to reduce radio interference this then requires longer signal cables which can increase the possibility of interference.
The other is to keep power leads as short as possible to reduce resistance which will cause voltage drop and possibly increase heat.

In models up to 4 feet it doesn't really matter as long as you check your installation before finally fixing it in.
In smaller models such as tugs the runs wont be long anyway.
In a very large model the power runs can be considerable.
I have used both successfully from a small tug of 18 inches length where there just isn't room to separate the electrics very far to large warships over 8 feet in length where space is not a problem.
As a good rule of thumb try and separate the power cables from the signal cables and if motors are suppressed you shouldn't get a problem.

Thanks Bob
I have some space, so I'll keep the power cables away from the signal cables. :)
(8ft Warship!!!  Phew!!)

GaryM,
As I run my models on 6 or 12 volts I usually use car/truck wiring, fuses, switches etc.
I just keep looking for the cheapest when out or if in a hurry Halfords as we have one close.

I get all my cables, leads, batteries etc from the Component Shop. Excellent prices and if you order by 3.00pm there is a fair chance you will receive your goods the following day. They also will accept a minimum order of £1.00.
