Please help identify parts on this boat
« on: March 05, 2013, 04:58:36 pm »

Hi everyone,

This is my current scratchbuild (my first too!), the Luftwaffe Flak boat Krischan der Grosse.

I'm trying to identify the items on the stern of the boat, on either side of the flag. It looks like it might be two white objects hanging on some kind of davit. What can you see? Any ideas what they might be?

Here's an enlargement:

Thanks for your help and ideas.

Regards
Hans

Hi tica,

That's an interesting idea - do you have any other pictures of them in use?

Thanks

There was an article about this boat in Marine Modelling International in September 2010 you could probably still get back issues if you haven't already.

Personally I think you're looking at liferaft davits (what ever the german equivelent of the "Carly Float" was)  The boat seems to resemble the Luftwaffe rescue launches that were featured in MMI late last year. Perhaps they retain their rescue rafts. Just a thought!

Hi TailUK,

I have that issue of Marine Modelling, it's what inspired me to build this boat in the first place, however that build didn't include those items. I'm trying to build it more 'scale' than it was done, but I'll probably exclude those too if I can't figure out what they should be.

On the left of the second picture where I've marked the 'objects' is a stack of three lifeboats, I think they are inflated rubber dingies, and also often seen on the decks of S boats.

I think the German equivalent of the Carly Float was a square shaped floatation device made of balsa covered with canvas - you often see them in period photos attached to turrets on Kriegsmarine ships, but I'm not an expert! I haven't seen photos of any other devices in use.

One thought I had was that they might be sea mines covered in canvas - but it seems unlikely that a Luftwaffe ship would undertake any mining duties.

Hi tica,

I've found pictures of smoke generators on this site/page: http://www.prinzeugen.com/Weapons.htm

I think it's a definite possibility!

Thanks
