Prinz Eugen finally gets her bottom wet??
« on: May 16, 2008, 10:37:46 am »

I have just had sea trials with the bare hull.
Here is a video of her running with the new ACTion (P94) Mixer running her 3 shafts.
She is not ballasted as I wanted to check how much available weight was required.
She is running on 12 volts to 3 x MFA 800 Motors (Thanks Stavros) and Ted Radestock (now G. Sitek) running gear.
She is 1/72 Scale and just over 10 feet in length, and DOESNT fit my car!!!

Well what can i say a mighty fine bit of steering from myself  {-) O0
She went really well and will look superb with all the upper works on her.

As for the mixer well thats some piece of kit in there doing what its supposed to VERY impressed.

That is a nice looking hull, she moves well with the mixer, very impressive. Looking at her she does not look like she will be ready for Wicksteed {-) {-) {-) {-).

10ft long looks like you next build will be a trailer Bob ;) ;) ;) ;)

Very manoeuverable Bob.  You could do with a bit bigger lake to do it justice.  I see what you mean about the ballasting though, I bet it wasn't often you got to see the bottom of the bow on the real Prinz!!

Dammit! Richard beat me to it!

To paraphrase "Jaws - The Movie"

"We're gonna need a bigger lake!"

Her speed will be spot on when she's down on her marks.

That mixer of young Millbourn's seems to do a spiffing job too.

The helmsman needs practice though :P

-Rob

Having seem this hull in the flesh, so to speak, I can confirm that it is BIG! A lot of power going through there and the mixer seems to work beautifully - couldn't see any smoke anywhere. Now let Steamboat Phil have a go Bob so he can bend the rudder linkage for you.....

Dicky ALL ships are she's

Just to PROVE her size, even this light she takes 2 to launch!!

Even after all that hard manouvering nothing was remotely hot, the main 30 amp fuse stayed intact and no water ingress.
Not bad for a 28 year old hull!!

Thanks to rmasmaster for the pics.

Very nice Bob though not sure about the knees.
If its taken 28 years to get that far when do you expect to finish ?
I thought all the German Navy ships were He not She.

No problem Colin.
Went home with a great big grin on my face and still have it.
The motor/mixer/prop combination are just what I wanted.
The props are about 20 yrs old so had to start with them and work forward.
When she is fully ballasted I am hoping to get a 12 volt 17 AH battery in her plus the superstructure and fittings of course.
That should make her deeper aft as well so should reduce the propwash on the surface.

What a great model, bl**dy brilliant. Loved the way SHE moved in the water. 1:72 scale - would cost an arm and a leg to ship that to Oz

Well done Bob ;) :) O0 O0

Looks like you could sail it there! Any idea how much current those motors are pulling?

The whole subject of Kriegsmarine ships gender is, as usual, not exactly cut and dried and to be fair to DickyD he is not wrong.

Traditionally of course ships have always been referred to as femail for all the reasons we jokingly refer to but Hitler specifically determined that the Bismarck and the Tirpitz should be referred to as male, due to thier power and presence.  Obviously traditionalists resisted this, considering it was bad luck, however a number of senior naval officers feeling it was a good career move supported this directive.

Consequently there were a number of probably more senior Kriegsmarine officers who referred to capital ships as male but also a great number of seafarers who continued with the traditional femail references.

victorian.
In air the 3 motors pull 4 1/2 amps.
I haven't done any load trials as yet but will now I know she handles as I want.
Each 20 amp ESC is protected by a 15 amp fuse, and the whole circuit is protected with a 30 amp fuse.
I have put her from full ahead to full astern with all fuses intact so am considering lowering the individual circuit fuses when I can get her in the water and check the current for each motor.

Teutonic mindset.

Germany has a "Fatherland" Most others have a "Mother Country".
