Have a look at this video, what kind of CNC sheet steel cutters did they have in the 1930's?

CNC's are hyped way too much, they only score with repetitive bulk work & accuracy , a good capstan / operator will run rings round a CNC , they can knock shafts / bolts / studs out in half the time a CNC takes & consistently too , I bailed CNC machining centres out many a time when they 'spit the dummy out' & packed up . .  .
All gone now . . .

It all looks self designed / built , the batteries in the fast boat looked like one shot SILVER ZINC cells , compare that with today's offerings , 2.4 meg multi channel radio / LIPO batteries / Brushless motors . . . and what's to come ?

What a klutz!

Mind it brought back school memories. In our electronics group a kid who was really into it for 14 years old rather than taking it up as something new like the rest of us. He came in one day with this massive electrolytic capacitor, us not knowing what it was were gullible to fall for it. He'd place it on your hand and tell you not to move, of course you did and got a massive jolt from it.

This thing really was big, not much smaller than todays coca cola cans, God knows where he picked it up from, but he was always bringing in stuff to impress the tutor.

in my first job we had an engineer who would charge up a capacitor on his megger, then toss it to you, if you caught it - you got a shock, if it hit you - you got a shock (mind you it was his office that was the other side of the wall we used for target air pistol shooting - until we realised that pellets were going right through the wall - oops) this was way before we worried about health and safety at work- maybe 1978-9. We hung calendars over the holes in the walls

Thank you for that one. So funny. It took me back to being 9 years old and trying to make my 3 volt motor go faster with wires to my bedside 240v lamp.

I've always been inquisitive and when I was about four I found that putting the pointy end of one of Mum's knitting needles on the the red hot bit of our electric fire element and touching the body of the needle on the metal guard resulted in a satisfying flashbang and neatly cut the needle in half. I never connected this with Nan having to re-wire a fuse. I also found the feel and pop when pushing a needle through the grill of Dad's prized Tannoy base reflex loud speaker and through the cone very satisfying, (to this day I still baggy first at poking my finger through the foil seal on a newly opened jar of instant coffee). He found out about the first and decided that the best way of demonstrating the effects of an electric shock was to connect me up with wires and matchsticks to a Henry Meadows impulse magneto and cranking it over. I learned a good lesson that day. The sight of a box of Swan Vestas always invokes memories of that day.
He never to my knowledge found out about the speaker which is probably a good thing because I'm never sure which would be worse, electrocution or execution!
Jerry.

I found out about electric shocks the day I tested an old radio battery the traditional way by sticking my tongue across the terminals, 9v gives a bit of a tingle - a 90v battery on the other hand, leaves a stinking headache - good job it was nearly flat. the other thing I learned as a kid was dont cut the mains cable on your train transformer when its still plugged in and switched on.

Eons ago when I was a squaddie based on Christmas Island I was a fitter in one of the power stations.
One of our squad had a habit of using the rear of the power station instead of walking to the latrine. This annoyed one of the electricians immensely so he wired up a Megger tester to the corrugated sheet wall and next time when the piddler used his 'private facilities', the sparks flew (as did his screams!) and he was instantly cured.  :-))
