{:-{I have a DUMB and certainly a EMBARRASING one but i would like some info on how to build a Springer. I have never built a boat from scratch. I don't no the first thing about or were to start. I guess my questions are, what type of wood, how thick and if i have plans do i trace the plans on to the wood? Just a few questions like that. Any info would help a lot, Thank You,Keith

Hi Keith yes, trace the outlines on to wood and then check they are the right overall dimensions,
ie. 18" long by 8" wide... or the nearest Metric conversion. Don't try to use too tick a wood for the hull bottom, use two layer instead.

Wood: Anything from 1/4" ply all the way up to 3/4" pine.
Tracing: You could, or stick the plan to card, cut out and use the card as a template.

Have a look at the San Francisco group.. http://sfmyc.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=49 (about 2 hours from you) as they are one of the 'main' centres for Springers on the West Coast.
They have a couple of Springer meets during the year too.

Hi Keith

Welcome to Mayhem, as has already been said trace around the plan on to the wood, cut a little away from the mark and then sand back to it. Any other questions on Springers ask away, there has been quite a few built by forum members. I have three sitting in my shed, but I am just a beginner compared to others.

Thanks for all the info guys it's real helpful. But i have another question? Do you fiberglass or epoxy over the hull? Or just leave it alone and paint it?

I have used waterproof varnish(3 coats),to seal the hull,then paint on top.
Remember to rub down between coats,to act as key for the next coat.
There are plenty of wood sealers availiable

It is a matter of choice , no fixed methods. If you are going to build a lightweight version useful weight and strength will by gained by glassing it. Most people I guess will settle for paint only. Some hulls are all glassfibre, at least one commercially available in the USA. No rocket science required. Your handle includes "hydro" if that is as in Hydroplane then Springers aint. Get started it`ll work no matter what route or material you use. Most of mine are recycled wood, no two built the same . As far as the build goes it is "Formula Libre" Do a standard regs (motor etc) one first, no point in super motors until you see what a basic one does on the water. Most value for your $$$$ in model boating IMHO. Good luck and keep us posted.

Got mine finished (sort of) today,put in bath for power test,nearly emptied the water,and fast or what.
Will take to pond sunday,give it sum,post pics monday.
Got the bug and built a barge for it to push/pull,a pic of it now and barge top

The scale of springers is... well, 1.8m(6 ft) is the height of your pilot figure, or
maybe 2.1m(7 ft) to the top of the door. A lot of people scale them to about 1/18 or 1/24.

Mine is scaled at 1/60

Voodoo,you have not seen some of Umi's work,she is a exemptional (spelt wrong) builder,and is all scratch built.
The barge will be on the water next weekend,swmbo had other plans for me to finish it off today

Yes, like all springers, this one is all scratch built.
Springers are good models to practice construction techniques.

I have been selling the 1/60 scale console to those that think they can use them.
The monitors are coming out okay, but not consistently. They sometime have
air bubbles in the castings. You can see the Master, and clear castings here.

I have also worked up a console top for 1/32nd scale.
It's up to the builder to either make a rectangular, or cut the corner
and make a beveled console top. Approximately 19mm x 28mm
The rabbet channels on the bottom allow the console top
to sit on 1.5mm thick wood or styrene cabinet sides.

They're in the pipeline, I am trying to get more stuff on the webpage, I can think of a
few things that aren't on the webpage yet. Most of it is due to production factors.
The Clear pieces for the 1/32 console were a test shot in the mold, and It had a few issues.

I'm working on it...
