Two props one controller
« on: July 19, 2009, 11:16:52 am »

Dopey question no doubt but how does one control two props (independently) with one RC controller that has only two joysticks.  One stick controls steering the other one prop ie can I buy a controller with three sticks or what?
Please don't shout at me!!  I know I'm a 'muppett' %% %%

Polycell,
If you buy a mixer this mixes the signals from the steering to the speed controllers.
Look on the ACTion website Dave does a combined 2 speed controller and mixer unit.

Here is the link: http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/mixers.php

The P94 is superb as seen in my Prinz Eugen: http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/kk251/shipmate600/?action=view&current=Picture031.flv

Thanks Shipmate but.......
What I am trying to do is have seperate controls via speed controllers I have.
So one stick does starboard prop via one speed controller whilst another stick does the port prop via its speed controller. So you can have one prop in reverse whilst the other is going forward.
AND have a stick??? to steer with.
Will a mixer do this? AS I said I have bought speed controllers.

Yes a mixer will reduce the speed of the inner prop depending on rudder angle.
It will also reverse the inner prop to let her turn on the spot if set up for this mode.
It does however require 2 x ESC's 1 per motor.
If you have these the ACTion mixer will suffice.

Sorry 'shippers' I understand what you are saying but another BUT....
I have two ESC one for each prop.
I have a two channel RC.
I want to be able to control each prop indepently so both can go full ahead and or both  go full astern
One can go full astern whilst the other go full ahead (or as near as possible).
Are these scenarios achievable with the mixer?

No,
And neither is your proposal for a 2 channel radio set.
To get what you want you will need a new Transmitter and receiver so each throtthe is on its own channel.

Save your speed controllers for another project or sell them.

Then get an ACTion P94 which will do all you want and more.

I haven't a clue about electrics but I have one and it is excellent.

The bottom line is you only have two channels and what you are asking for requires three, independent control for each motor and a channel for the rudder.

Obviously this can't be done.

The action unit automatically controlls the operation of the motors but does not allow you to manually control them.  Your only option is at least a three channel radio and bearing in mind now that you can get a new 2.4 five channel set for about 50 quid it's no contest to me.  You can also go the whole hog and get a six channel 2.4 set and control up to 10 models with the same transmitter, all you need is a new reciever at around 50 quid for each model.

The huge advantage of not messing around with frequencies and controlling your models without fear of interference cannot be over stated and to me you should be looking at a 2.4 set.

If polycell looks at
http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/mixers.php
and looks at the P40C, which is just a mixer, it will do the job automatically and allow him to use his existing ESCs.  The only thing that he will be unable to do that he could do with extra channels is run on one motor or the other.
