Hi All

I am currently building the U2540 as a standard dynamic diver - my first sub.I have found it quite difficult but I am about 70% done and the end is in sight.
I would like to ask you experienced submariners out there the following -

1) Would a self levelling device and / or a depth control be of benefit on this sub?
2) If yes where do these connect in the electrics?
3) Where would I buy these items and which are the best makes/models?

Hi.

Yes you will need an automatic levelling device for the sub, it connects into the receiver socket ( rear vanes ) and the other end into the rear vane servo.

There are stand alone devices ie you cannot overule it from the t/mitter as it runs on a power source independent of the receiver or one that connects into the receiver and you can overide it at will from the t/mitter, this would be the one to go for IMHO as you can alter depth from the t/mitter and then it will go back into auto level mode at that depth.

 There are traders that sell this type of device... Microgyros / Subtech / Engle  to mention a few.

I hope its been of use, for your info this kit is an easy convert to static dive with an 850ml Engle tank should you wish to go that way at a later date.

I will go for an auto-leveller as you recommend.I have a Robbe/Futaba Navy 14 TX,will I need to fit an extra switch to control the auto-leveller for example when changing depth level ? Does it need to be switched on and off while achieving the required depth ? I would expect I will be running at periscope depth most of the time.

Hi,

No you don't need any extra switches at all, just plug it into your receiver where the rear hydroplane servo will go and the rear hydroplane servo goes into the other socket . It will stay dormant until the attitude of the sub changes and then when the sub goes level again it goes back to being dormant, it only works as the subs trim moves from the horizontal as it is switched on all the time as the receiver is powered up.

With the Tx and Rx on hold the sub and drop the bow down and you should see the leveller move the servo this is so you can see which direction the servo will move the hydroplanes in, if it is moving them the wrong way just turn the levelling device around, just for info when the bow drops the rear vanes should move down so it will pull the bow down.

Woops................ my mistake when the bow drops the rear vanes should go up NOT down as my previous post, so they LIFT the Bow, sorry for the typo error.
