Monahan Vertical Heron Steam Plant
« on: January 08, 2010, 02:07:57 am »

This plant has been on my wish list for a very long time.  On the 22nd of December, I finally bit the bullet and purchased it as my Christmas present from old Saint Nick!  ;)

Can't wait for it to arrive. :-)

In the meantime, here are some stock photos:

More on it's arrival. :-)

Hi Richard , beautiful bit of kit, very nice, what are you putting it in ?

I think model stream has taken another leap forward in the plants available to modelers , I think Cheddar made the first leap with plants that where cheap (ish) and reliable and usable without special knowledge, Monahan has now moved that on " I think" to a thing of beauty thatcan be admired and then the big WOW when they run, this type of engine was only previously seen on the top table of model engineering shows now they can be bought.

my thought's

The Heron Engine is absolutely beautiful and a masterpiece of model engineering, I particularly enjoy watching mine turn very slowly so you can actually watch everything that is going on.  I once had to remove a valve chest cover at a show to prove to a chap that it really is a slide valve engine because neither of us could believe that they could be manufactured so small!

I completely agree Neil, has anyone got a nice clinker built wooden hull going spare? :embarrassed:

Orion Mouldings have a pretty good looking Fifie hull that might suit.

Link: http://www.orionmouldings.com/scottishfifiehullandplan.htm

It's fibreglass, but looks well finished and would make an interesting open launch.

Thanks for that Neil but I already have a beautiful Kingston Mouldings hull but I'd really like a wooden clinker built hull for this engine.  I've got a set of plans for the Wide Awake hull but simply not enough time to build it at the moment.

Thanks everyone.  :-)

I have always thought this plant to be an exquisitely beautiful piece of model engineering.  Due to my remote location, I've never had the privilege of seeing it run in person, though I have seen videos and heard nothing but good reports.

As for a boat, Peter,.... I have nothing in mind at present.  Something like Opal, perhaps.  An open launch whose simple but elegant lines would compliment but not distract from the beauty of the plant.  I'm advised, however, that the Belmont boiler is too heavy for the original kit.

Neil,....... you have my word.  If I don't like it, I'll send it straight on to you!  :}

HI Richard,

Yes, unfortunately, would be far too big for the Opal. :((

Your plant would suit this hull very well- www.orionmouldings.com/steamlaunchhullandplans.htm

It is very american looking when in the water, and is large enough to put some proper detailing in.

Just a suggestion anyway :-))

Hello Richard.

You purchased a beautiful steam plant. I'm looking forward to your boat.
In 1991 - 1992 I built a similar engine.

Hello.
This 2 cylinder engine is a part of my steam plant. I built this steam plant between 1990 and 1995.
The engine I built for a boat you can see at "model steamtug Maarten".

Now THAT should be in a model tug- a proper 50"er- proper hotwell and everything. Just a pleasure to see craftsmanship like that.

Some more photos:

There are a lot of small details I love about this plant:  The design of the displacement lubricator, separation tank and boiler fill caps.  The pressure equalization valve on the sight glass to give accurate water level readings, my one and only gripe with MHB boilers, to name only two.

Oh you'll soon get bored with all those neatly bent pipes, that polished brass and copper that that immaculately finished engine.

When it gets pushed to the back of the toy cupboard with all the other 'favourite toys', I'll be waiting.
