Identify vertical boiler
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:31:47 am »

Hi,
I have recently bought this boiler and I'm trying to find out who made it.
It's a very nicely detailed item, with quite a complicated fire-tube arrangement inside.

The pressure gauge reads BRUCE ENG, could that be the manufacturer? I've never heard about them.

Here is a link to Bruce Eng, they are part of pollymodel engineering:

http://www.pollymodelengineering.co.uk/

I think they mainly do boiler and steam fittings/ engines, dont think they do boilers.

Thanks, but there's no mention of such a boiler there. The search continues...  {:-{

That's a so-called kingdom type boiler manufactured by John Hemmens (or Maxwell Hemmens), not in production at the moment :-).  Really - a very good purchase, rare thing.

Thanks, I have discovered a sort of serial number on the boiler's bottom: SK-10-93-180
Any clues?

I've cleaned and de-scaled the boiler today.
Does anyone know how to remove that part with 2 holes where the 2 burners go inside the boiler? Doesn't seem to move at all.
I'd like to be able to use another burner too, that's why I'm trying to figure out how to remove it.

Hi Kno3,

Wonderful boilers in model and full size- just a little point of scale detail- in full size the spun smokebox top is always polished- usually brass- but i guess n this size copper would look ok. Its a matter of personal preference of course but I thought you might want to know.

Hi Kno3,

Compare your model to this picture- the Kingdon boiler on SL Ashphodele- the part I mean is the big polished brass top on the smokebox.

Ok, got it now. But I'm not very keen on scraping the nice paint on the boiler...

Besides:
I've written to John Hemmens and he confirmed it's a Hemmens boiler. He says the cap is a press fit, I'll see if I can remove it without scratching the finish.

Yes, I thought it may be late in the day to do remedial work- however you could carefully paint on paint remover with a small brush then wash off with water- just as a sugestion?

Very nice, are they yours?
By the way, does anybody know what the arrangement of flues inside is? Couldn't see much in mine, except that it has fire tubes at the top (in the fat part of the boiler), placed in a circle.

Hi Kno3,

In full size- which I know from his work Hemmens lkes to replicate- they are arranged thus- the diagram on the right being how the tubes wre centred instead of the usual criss-cross pattern taken 45deg from the centreline.

Hi Bernhard,

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think that particular one is a single flue as opposed to multi firetubes?

Thanks. The inside of the Hemmens Kingdon doesn't look exactly like your drawing, the smoke tubes are arranged in a circle. The fire box seems to be a 90 degree bent large diameter pipe, but I have no idea how it connects to the smoke tubes. I've made a drawing of what I could discover so far:

Hi all,

I have a question. What thread do the tiny valves used by Hemmens for the water gauge have?
It can be seen in this picture, it's the one close to the burner:

By the way, I made the first steam test of the boiler today. Seems to work, but the burner makes a terribly annoying howling noise. How do I get rid of that?

Happy Easter!

Noise is caused by the air flow, may possibly be resonance...
