Advice on Subs please chaps
« on: October 31, 2010, 02:46:53 pm »

I am looking to buy a model Submarines, but I don't know to much about them. I don't mind which kind of dive system it has long as it has a lot of detail in the kit. Could anyone tell me which are the best large kits to buy please.

Quite an open question there...

It all depends on how much you wish to spend on the " kit " etc.

Whether it is a dynamic or static dive kit will sigificantly alter the price, the dynamic ones are not as expensive as the static kits but then you get a lot more in them etc, as a rough estimate you can spend anything from £500.00 to £2,500.00 +.

Regards Sub.

if you want a largish kit, a good one to start with is the Robbe Type VII. There is plenty of 3rd part stuff to make this into a museum quality boat. If you dont want an ABS hull then One of the Engel kits WWII sub kits would fit the bill. There was someone here selling a barely started Engel Gato.

Suggest you have a look at the AMS website for info on diving systems:

Large scale kits with GRP hulls will be expensive as already mentioned.

Another alternative, if you don't mind a smaller scale, is to look at the Revell conversions of the Gato and Type VII class, which are both 1/72nd scale.

You could certainly be in the water with one of these for £200-300, maybe less if you have R/C, batteries etc. already and are a canny shopper.

you could buy a secondhand sheerline for about £300 to £500 or have a look at ebay as some good deals are availible if you get the right advice and can travel. I got a sheerline akula  and the postage to yorkshire from the south coast by courier was only  £18
there was a sheerline trafalgar near sheffield for sle on the modelboats.co.uk site.

Hi DD,

Do you have some pictures, or a building thread of this sub?

What did you build into it?
24"looks rather small to make a working RC sub, or am I mistaken?

Regards, Jan.

I have been playing with subs for about two years and the following may  be of some help:
The practicality and Size of the sub really depends on:
a. How big is your car/van does the model fit in the boot or do you need to put it across the rear seat?
b. Can you get the model in when going away with the family and bags for the weekend?
c. How heavy is the model to carry to the pond?
d. How far would you need to carry it for?
e.Would you need a trolley( does it fit in the car)?
f. will it look small and insignificant in the pond?

My sheerline Ohio ( 67" long) was very big and the chap i bought it from was giving up subs as it gave him a hernia lifting the boat in and out ( heavier till water drains away) of the pond. Looked like an aircraft drop tank in terms of size!
My Sheerline Trafalgar is 53" long and not too heavy but needs to be either across the rear seats or diagonally across the boot. has presence in the water.
My Sherline Akula is 44" long very light and fits across the boot and is easy to fit in the car even when going away with the family/dog for the weekend.

So I have  2 x 55" models for home sailing and short trips and 44" Akula for family weekends away.
Dynamic divers are ok but statics are wonderful.
