And the Suez government are reportedly suing evergreen for 1 BN, I wonder how many camels that is that the pilot will have to give, as he is the Master is he not whilst transiting?

As far as I can remember from Noddy's Book of Ship Mastering it was pilots advice and Masters responsibility. Then again it was pointed out that the two most useless items on a ship were an umbrella and a soldier.

For a vessel of that size and cargo would be in the region of £750k to £1m but it all depends on any discounts they may have in place. There was, about, 3-4 years ago, some discussion about the larger container carriers going via the Cape as there was little differance in the cost of doing so.

I suspect that the Cape route cost is how they set the Suez price.

Given that most ships did eventually sail through the canal the $1 billion dollars figure sounds like a USA lawsuit number. ie insane. I can't see that the ships delayed will get any of it. I wonder where the court is located that will have the final say on this.
