Very sad news about Sir Christopher Lee passing away at the age of 93 , from Dracula to Scaramanga to Count Duku to Saruman an actor of unrivalled talents ( over 250 films for one and more on screen sword fights than any other actor alive or dead ) a man that served in the S.O.E. during WW2 ( and who corrected Peter Jackson the director of the Lord of the Rings about the scene where Saruman gets stabbed in the back , after PJ said he should scream in pain he said this "Peter have you ever heard the noise a man makes when he's stabbed in the back?","erm No I haven't","Well I have, I know what to do"...

Ah the halcyon days of watching Hammer house of horror from behind the cushions....
Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing.... sigh!

Didn't Christopher Lee have a way out of character role  Battle of the River Plate?

Not forgetting Ron Moody who also passed away aged 91 not such a prolific actor as Christopher but a great actor non the less, I suppose both had a good innings, but ninety doesn't seem so old to me as it used to.  {:-{

When you were a teenager and 30 seemed ancient, then when you were 30 and the 50's were something grandparents were.
Now 60 and that doesn't seem so old considering the rapidly approaching alternative ok2

His time in S.O.E. is still classified ( probably be de-classified now he's dead ) but sounds like he went hand to hand with a knife and a few Nazi's....

The quote is true though he said it in a few interviews as has Peter Jackson after the making of the Lord of the Rings films

We get whirlpools in our neck of the woods, from tidal currents coming out of our inlets.  The whirlpools usually aren't as bad as the "boils" which are the smoother topped upwellings.  They can grab your boat, especially a deep draft boat like a sailboat, and take you for a bit of a ride.

Tugboats pull booms and barges through these narrows, and some have ships that run through them as well.  You have to make sure you navigate some of these at slack water.

Here is one of the more impressive ones, named Skookumchuck Narrows, or Sechelt Rapids.  Skookumchuck is a Coast Salish (West Coast Native) saying.  Skookum means strong, and Chuck means water.

Of course Lake Texoma is different, essentially it is like pulling the plug on a bathtub!

Checked out some clips of Corryvrecken on youtube.  That is impressive, the shear size of it.  Around here it is usually in the narrows leading into big inlets that we get such strong current.

This one is called Nakwakto Rapids.  It has an island smack dab in the middle, which supposedly shakes during a spring ebb.  This is further up the coast.  I have never been to this one.

The BBC report was a something and nothing item, http://uk.businessinsider.com/giant-vortex-draining-lake-texoma-2015-6 explains it a lot better.  The vortex is not the result of strange unexpected geological happenings, but the result of an underwater control sluice being opened to control the water level in the reservoir.

try going through the Pentland Firth !! there are areas of whirlpools in the firth where even fairly large boats ( 67m 2,400t research trawler !! ) get thrown around a fair bit on an otherwise flat calm day , there is a huge tidal flow through the Firth though ( up to 9+ knots on Spring tides )

The "bomb" left at the Co-op at Buchan Road Fraserburgh,EOD on their way

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-33315534

Right over the back of my house.... an absolute fake but the cost of taking bomb disposal up from Rosyth will be large and when they catch the idiot that did this they should be forced to pay ALL the costs including the lost taking for the shop keepers

Is it me or is the Flying Scotsman the most overhauled steam locomotive of ALL time?!?!?
Ever since I was a kid I've seen the headline 'Flying Scotsman in for major overhaul'...

Re: In the News !!! - Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship
« Reply #822 on: August 17, 2015, 05:43:03 pm »

Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship (MARS)

A pioneering project has been launched which aims to design, build and sail the world's first full-sized, fully autonomous unmanned ship across the Atlantic Ocean.

At over 100ft in length The Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship, codenamed MARS, will use state-of-the-art wind and solar technology for its propulsion enabling an unlimited range. The revolutionary trimaran vessel will carry on board a variety of drones through which it will conduct experiments during its voyage.

Following a year-long testing phase, the planned Atlantic crossing in 2020 will mark the 400th anniversary of the original Mayflower sailings from Plymouth, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.
Project MARS is being developed by a partnership of Plymouth University, autonomous craft specialists MSubs and Shuttleworth Design.

Regarding Martin's question about the Flying Scotsman - below are 2 photos I took of her on my last visit to the UK in 2008. She was in the National Railway Museum in York, and had been stripped down as part of a very long and, I suspect, very expensive overhaul.

The other 2 shots I took in 1988 when Scotsman was on her Australian tour for our bi-centenary celebrations. The photos were taken just north of Casino in northern NSW, on the main Sydney to Brisbane line, on an untypically (for our area) wet day. One can only imagine what 'elf and safety's reaction would be today. Scotsman is leading number 3801, one of the NSW Government Railways' preserved C38 Class express passenger locos.

Nice photos Peter!    :-))

I saw her once when I was a kid, I remember not being very impressed.  I had always seen photos and dramatic painting of her since an early age so in my mind's I had made much, much larger than it really was... about the size of small ship!  So when it came coasting past us on a small station in Lancashire somewhere I was a bit nonplussed...!   {:-{
