arthritic fingers and tank steering
« on: March 15, 2014, 09:28:33 am »

Chaps, bear with me here..my snow cat has twin 380 motors operated by two separate sticks on the tx (4 channel tx)...left stick = left motor forward/reverse, right stick =right motor forward/reverse, sort of tank steering. My arthritic hands and fingers are making controlling the beast difficult, so I need to be able to control both motors from one stick (preferably the right one)

I can hook up the rx so the right stick controls both motors, but I really need to be able to push 'up' for both motors forward, push 'down' for both motors reverse, push 'left' to turn left, push 'right' to turn right...are you with me so far?

Now..the question is...how do I achieve this? Anybody have any ideas? I could swap the radio for my Planet, but could I turn the whole right stick unit on the tx through forty five degrees to give me what I need?

Does that make any sense?

Your opinions/comments/derogatory remarks eagerly awaited...

What Transmitter are you using? Does it have a 'V-Tail-Elevon' switching function? If you enable that you can 'tank steer' two channels on  your right hand stick ( if you are running a Mode 2 set, left hand throttle layout ).

You could put a  "Y"  lead to the motors on the up/down stick.  The steering servo could be controlled by the  left/ right stick.

You will then be able to steer right or left whilst driving forward or backward.    :-))

Alan...no, it's the Kyosho supplied very basic 2.4gHz, 4 ch tx/rx. I can swap the radio for my Planet 5, but no built in mixers, more's the pity.

Ken...yep, I see your point, but I'll still end up having to use both sticks on both sides of the tx. What I really need (apart from new fingers) is to be able to use one stick on one side of the tx to control forward/reverse and left/right.

You can with my idea above.  It's the same toggle you push up and down and left and right.  You may be confusing it with slowing only one motor  when turning, but it doesn't do this.  Only Action's gear will vary the speeds on turns. (or a clever transmitter as unbuiltnautilus says)

I used the left stick for a second model and was able to drive two Springers at the same time.  Very challenging this   mmmph !!

It's on my YouTube films.

Cheers

That won't work if the steering is controlled by left and right motor speed. i.e. no rudder or steering rack
AKA Tank or tracked vehicle steering.

Ah, I see now...it begins to make sense (slowly)

Clever transmitters and me don't get on...my grey cells and my fingers don't comprehend multi switching any longer, one reason why I needed a break from subs.

So...two choices then? The Ken Y lead idea, or an Action mixer? I do like the idea of being able to vary the speed when turning, it would be very useful when running indoors at shows, etc. And the Action mixer is considerably cheaper than a smart transmitter.

Ned, you're confusing me now.. :embarrassed: ..the controls are:left/right motor speed control and direction control.

The mixer looks at the throttle channel and steering channel and figuring out what each motor should be doing to do what you wanted, then gives the appropriate instructions to the ESCs.  The ESCs handle the motors.

Even better...best I go make a bid on that, then. That sounds like the ideal thing to do what I need.

Thank you, young sir...much appreciated as always.

Goes back to the days when I had my black piranha, known as the BBF (Big Black Fella) ...he had a mouthful of railings like you'd never believe. Put me in hospital once when I tried to hand feed him...six stitches.

I imported him direct from Peru...16'' of pure Peruvian evil.

'er that was indoors wouldn't let me have a shark...the BBF used to go for her if she stood beside his tank, I dread to think what a shark would have done.   ;D
