Fairey Huntress information
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:22:15 am »

Hi all i was looking if anyone had information on obtaining drawings for the Fairey Huntress!

23 boats went to the MoD / Admiralty for use as Captain's motor boats on County class destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, Assault ships and other harbour duties. They seem to have been used more as water ski boats for the ship's crew when the destroyers were abroad. They were also fitted to Iranian and Libyan frigates.

There's a list of club officials under "Contact Us". I've had correspondence with Scott Pett, the magazine editor, and he's a very helpful and resourceful bloke. If anyone can assist you then they'll probably have something to do with the Owners Club.

We had a Huntress on Ark Royal as the Captains Boat during my tour in 1976-78. On occasions it was made available for the transport of the other Officers ashore. I had a few trips in it, splendid boat with a beautiful 'roar' to it.

If I get enought pictures of the Royal Navy huntress I will Draw up some model makers plans if anyone is interested.   Maybe thinking I will make a mould like what the chat that is making the thames lifeboat!

What scale size would people want.
Precedent Fairey Huntsman 31  is on the market, so sizes of the huntress are to be like for like in scale
1/8  46"
1/11 34"

Huntress  28
1/8     42"
1/11   30"   same scale as  the Precedent Fairey Huntsman
1/12   28"
1/6     56"
1/5     67.2"

I am looking at for myself a toss up with the 1/8 to go with whats on market with the 1/12   and maybe a big one for the fun of it.  1/6 or 1/5   !!
If I had ther room, I could make a 1/1 size,  not far from it with the 1/6  .... %% {-)

I would be interested in a set of 1:8 plans of the Huntress, it will go nicely with my huntsman.

Cheers

Slightly off track, but from the same general if updated family. Anybody seen any drawings for the Transworld Yachts Swordsman 40. Came across a photo of a 1/12 scale model in a case, manufactures display model ? Think the photo had been copied from a publication as it had a number and bits of other photos around it.

 Swordsman 37, 40 Legend Rekindled

he year 2000 saw the start of the project to build Fairey Marine boats again.  Using the Fairey Dagger hull and a superstructure re-designed by Alan Burnard, Swordsman Marine showed the first Swordsman 37 at the Southampton Boat Show later that year.  By the time she appeared at the London Boat Show in January 2001, she had been launched, filmed and boat tested by Motor Boats Monthly magazine. The fibreglass hulled Dagger was originally a military boat and was also used by customs and police.  The military specification of the hull (designed to be either 37 or 40 foot) has been maintained, giving an enormously strong boat.

she looks like an enlarged Huntsman 31, and shares the dry, soft ride qualities of her well renowned predecessor.  With their extra length and weight they can cope with even more sea than the original Swordsman. The 40ft version with twin 456hp Caterpillar diesel engines has been clocked at almost 37 knots!

Hi Onora,

Was just wondering where this project of the Huntress plans/hull had got to?
Did you end up building one?

There is now a plan for the Huntress at 1/12 scale (23" long), available from Sarik Hobbies.  https://www.sarikhobbies.com/product/fairey-huntress-23-2/

Thanks DaveM,

23" is a goob bit smaller than my 46" Hunstman 31 unfortunately. Shame it's not around the 40" mark, they'd go well together then.

Thank you anyway.

It would take all of about half a minute to rescale the plans to any size required. That's the beauty of CAD. PM me if you want to follow this up....although there may be a larger version surfacing in the not-too-distant future  8)
