Replacement for Planet tx@ rx
« on: August 15, 2016, 01:15:11 pm »

I hope you will be able to help me with getting a new tx @ rx. At the moment I have Planet T5 trans and receiver. For my next boat I was going to get a Planet T7, could you suggest a replacement for  this, I have limited monies but could get up to about £80. Thanks Gerard.

How many channels do you require?

If you can manage with 6 channels, then I recommend this one (or in its Flysky Guise)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__62710__Turnigy_TGY_i6_AFHDS_Transmitter_and_6CH_Receiver_Mode_2_.html

A really solid transmitter with a choice of receivers, some with telemetry. 12 model memory, variable end points, etc.  Tx and Rx for less than £40.

If you need more than 6 then the i10 offers 10, but at greater cost - approx £135.

There is only one possible fly in the ointment, depending on how far away you expect to operate .  This from a review on Hobbyking

"Very good little radio set for the money. All soldering inside satisfactory, wiring tidy and gimbals smooth in operation. Full channel failsafes. Display is nice and clear, and all switches fall to hand well. RX is very small, has nice long twin antennae with the ends well protected, but is clearly marked 'Park Flier' so no long distance with this gear!!!

Given that in aircraft models they talk about 100metres for park fliers, probably enough for most people but just needs to be borne in mind

I'm using a flysky Fs-i6 now.
I also use a planet T7 and honestly, I'm finding the flysky to be a meteoric upgrade. It has memory for a number of models (wheras the T7 has none) and it is very easy to reverse channels, much moreso than the planets, because the channel numbers are listed on screen AND on your receiver).

The system also has limited telemetry capability, so the screen shows you TX voltage, RX voltage and also %error in the signal, which essentially warns that you're going out of range. On the water today I got to 200m before the signal error suddenly started jumping from more than 1% (although it does climb very quickly when it does!).

Also, the aerial is moulded in and therefore is essentially indestructible, which is a massive bonus if you don't have a dedicated case for your TX. I was forever knocking the end of my planet off.

It's pretty cheap at around £50 from most places and new RX's are about a tenner. I'll be picking up a few spares while they're still around so I can run my whole fleet off of it.

I haven't had any range problems with mine either.
I have found this receiver is slightly smaller than the two usually sold for the i6 and its a pound or so cheaper. It does't offer any telemetry at all, but that's not something I really need.

I'm mainly going to be using telemetry for a ketch I'm building. It's going to have a sail winch which draws half an amp idle, along with a backup brushless motor. Given the battery I can fit in it is relatively small and I tend to sail for at least an hour and a half or more at a stretch, I will really do with a model voltage warning!

Comes with two receivers. Other colours (i.e. Black) are available.
This is not a recommendation; I'm just passing on some information which was sent to me. Suit yourselves, m'ducks.

One more question with regard to the TRY -i6 , are the stick controls both spring loaded , if not are you able to convert.
Thanks Gerard

Gerard - no they are not. There are two version available Mode 1 and Mode 2, but one stick is non centered in both modes. I don't know of any conversion, but haven't really looked.

FlySky FS-i6....can be "upgraded" to use ten.....yes 10...channels

I use a "park fly" Gr3e , 3 channel rx in my converted "workboat", and go the full 150yds up the lake, with no loss of signal,
others at the same lake lose their signal in certain places on the lake, but I have not found it yet.

Spare gimbals are available from BangGood for less that £6.00
My i6 has full 10 channel capability and has both gimbals set as self centring...can't fault the system so far.

They also do a replacement screen, motherboard, antenna mount and a three hole balance bar for it as well.
