Hello All, I am new to the forum and thought I would share my current build, a 1/72 scale T42 destroyer HMS York based on a Fleetscale hull. This will be my fourth warship build and as a starting point I have made the stand, next i shall start the framing and fitting of running gear. Regards Jon

Hi Jon,
Firstly, welcome to the forum. The best forum for model boats bar none. You'll get some cracking advice on here and never be embarrassed to ask any questions.


The Type 42 were fine looking ships especially the 'stretched'42, I remember trying to 'cop' all the 42's at various Navy Days at Pompey back in the 80's which I and my good mate managed to do as well as all the Leanders and the Counties........ah those were the days when we had a Navy! The only ship we didn't get to see was HMS Unseen, not sure why!


Trying now to remember the names without googling!...........York, Gloucester, Edinburgh and...........?


Great thing about modelling the 42 is the amount of info there is online, unlike my most recent project, a BPBCo 71ft 6in Motor gun boat in 1/24 scale, there is some info but not a lot, the Vospers favour popularity for some reason!


Anyway, looking forward to seeing your progress on this, I've always been tempted to try a 42 but always been put off by the complexity of the bridge wing area and just below that and also the varying angles of the bridge windows, I'll be interested to see how this is done and then possibly may be I'll have a bash at the 42 myself.

Hello Dave, Thanks for the welcome.


Manchester was the other batch 3 T42.


The bridge will be interesting, but probably no more difficult than the Leander I have just finished, this also has compound curves to contend with. The hull under the bench is also a T42, but a batch 1 version. I was send in error and also got damaged in transit, good old UPS. I think the driver must have jumped up and down on it to cause the damage, any way I am going to try to repair it at some point. Jon

regarding information on the British Power Gun Boat - have you a set of plans by John Pritchard? for this particular vessel - as you can obtain a lot of information from these plans


Also, Christian (on this forum) / MTB Hulls is a mine of information on Coastal forces - he will surely help/point you in the correct direction.


John - just out of interest what era are you building your  model   type 42 from?  As she was completed leaving the dockyard or as she is now after her final refit?  There are vast differences between the two.


I myself built a model which is at 1:96 scale depicting her as she is now.  It has all the mods and cons.    If you would like a look at the build, it is somewhere on this forum under warships you may find the build.

John, just read your build thread, see you went with plank of frame. Done a few Plank on frame period ships but never something that large, very impressive. Jon

Managed to get back in the workshop this afternoon for a couple of hours, decided to start framing out the hull for the deck supports and hit a snag. I use 2mm plasticard sheet for the deck, supported by spruce strips approx 1/4 X 3/8 inch. The problem I always find is a reference point on the hull to get the deck level and flat, so this time I marked out the waterline and using a couple of spirit levels and a metre rule marked out the position for the deck supports. The deck level on this model is controlled partially by the strengthening beams on the hull sides, so using these as a point of reference I continued to mark the deck support positions moving after only to find that hull is too low at the back.
After a bit of head scratching and a cup of tea, I always have a tea break when I need inspiration   The solution I came up with was to add a strip of material (2 x 2 mm plastic strip)to the top of the hull, which I will sand flush with the hull later. I hope the pictures will explain what I have done. Next job will be the quarter deck and running gear. Jon

Thanks for the info, I haven't got the John Pritchard plans but would love to get hold of some! I was hoping to obtain some plans from the sadly deceased and much missed John Lambert but these are obviously hard if not impossible to obtain. Also Al Ross plans can be difficult to get hold of too.

I think us modellers are all the same, got to have some form of liquid refreshment to give us that space to think, thing is though when I come in from the man cave to make a brew I end up having to make the rest of the household one..........I never get one brought out to me though......might have to get a kettle and some supplies in to the aforementioned man cave!!!

Managed a couple of hours in the workshop today, finished opening up the quarterdeck openings, and fitting deck supports and cut quarterdeck to size. I'll fix down once the running gears is installed, that's the next job. Jon

Been a while since my last update, managed to get a few hours in the workshop and continued to fit the running gear. Due to the shallow angle of the prop-shafts and the larger motor diameters I can't mount them the usual way, that is on the base of the hull. This time I shall have to mount them upside down hanging from some sort of support. Working on a design to hang the motors and make them removable just in case. Regards Jon

Had a day off work and managed a few hours in the work shop, finished tidying up the running gear installation, and started on the decking. I'm using 2mm plasticard for the decks. Jon

As we have our fare share of that white stuff outside , decided to work from home and continued with cutting out the decking from 2mm plasticard. Not ready to fix down yet as I need to finish the quarterdeck first. One job I tackled today was to create the recess in the helideck for the helicopter harpoon grating. As the grating is only 0.10mm thick, cutting out a circular recess to such a shallow depth presented a challenge. So I decided to remove the whole circle and glue in another piece that is thinner. Happy with the result and glad I did this before fixing down the decking. Next job will be to complete the quarter deck area. Jon

Having seen Joe's beautifu build of this class a couple years ago, I can see that yours is also becoming a lovely model. I like the frame detailing, it adds such a lot even when partially obscured because of the angles we look through the openings at.

Managed to get a good session in the workshop today and started on the rear superstructure/hanger. Decided to make the hanger floor removable to aid access to the motors and shafts. The removable panel in the pictures will be attached to the hanger its self eventually, once the hanger interior has been finished and painted. Jon

When building the superstructure I always find it easier to build it on the hull as opposed to the bench, this way it is build taking into consideration any variances in the deck. Started with the basic sides and end panels applying cross bracing where necessary.

Continued today with the hanger, created the wall internal walkway and frame detail. I'll fit the roof once the internals are complete and painted. Jon
