It's not boat related, but I have just received word that my brother-in-law, George Punter, from Bundaberg in Queensland, has been awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Challenge Trophy at the above exhibition. His model of a Saunderson and Mills tractor won a Gold Medal at the last Model Engineering Exhibition, so he was invited to enter in the D of E Challenge Trophy. The model is completely scratch built, even to the extent that he did all his own drawings. He took literally hundreds of photos of an example of the tractor in a museum in Geraldine, on New Zealand's South Island which, coupled with other extensive research, enabled him to create the drawings. The model is quite large and is fully operational. He constructed a special box so the model could withstand the rigours of a long distance journey from Queensland to England, which it has now done twice. The weight of the model and its box is in the vicinity of 65 kg, I know because I helped him load it on its first trip to the UK a couple of years ago.

It's actually supposed to be George himself. A friend of his sculpted a clay model of his face which he then scanned and 3D printed, as the clay was too soft. However, I don't think it looks much like him at all. However, it gives a sense of scale to the model. Attached are some more shots of the tractor I took while it was under construction.


His current project is a 5" gauge model of a Queensland Railways DH class diesel locomotive, built in Maryborough by Walkers Ltd, between 1966 and 1974. Walkers kindly provided him with drawings of the loco, as well as access to the works for photographic purposes. The motor itself is not a scale model of the original, but is specially designed by George for the purpose.

I have received an email from a very excited George with some shots of the Duke Of Edinburgh Trophy he won at Doncaster. He does not get to keep the trophy, but his name will be engraved on it alongside some famous names in the Model Engineering world.

I would love to go Stan, but it's half a world away from me and my days of long distance air travel are well behind me. I will wait until George gets back to Australia later this week and hear a full report from the man himself.

Apparently, apart from the two clubs stands there were no marine entries/exhibits at all.

HI Yes only 2 model boat clubs on site but they put on a great display of models. Sadly only one marine entry in competition. I do not understand why local M B  clubs to the area do not attend.

The whole thing was done at a month's notice for various reasons so I'm not surprised at the lack of marine entries. If they carry on next year then things may improve but a lot of people had thought thet that the MEX competition had gone for good following the Brooklands show in 2017.

We will have to see. I will check out the situation with the organisers.
