Import an RTR Boat From the USA
« on: November 27, 2020, 03:08:57 pm »

I am considering buying an RTR Power Boat from the USA. I am wondering about duty (4.7%) and CE marking. Any advice is appreciated.

Don't forget VAT at 20% on all costs including carriage.

As I understand it, don't rely on this, the transmitter needs to have a CE marking to be legal here. The US allowable transmitter power output is much higher in the US than in Europe.

I am sure that a lot purchased from China have no such approval.i

it's worth checking the frequency it uses too. almost certainly it will be 2.4, which is fine, but some stuff uses other frequencies not allowed over here and potentially dangerous.

If you are buying an RTR, even from a US company, it is most likely made in China (even if OEM).
You can most likely buy the direct from China or even other suppliers in Europe. If you can buy it in the EU you will escape a lot of the problems mentioned in earlier posts.

Also, anything imported into UK, you not only have to pay any duty, there is also a handling charge for the customs paperwork.
I am not sure of the current status of duty paid items imported from the EU.

There are no problems or fees with anything imported from the Eu until January first. After that......................

There is a considerable amount of dumb luck importing from the US.  The item might well just turn up, OTOH, you might wind up taking a trip to a collection office to pay the fee for ParcelForce not delivering it plus their handling fee for charging you plus VAT and any import duty and quite possibly somebody's birthday do.  One $30 kit eventually cost over £50, another just simply turned up at cost plus P&P.
Items from the PRC and some other far eastern sources seem to appear at a point inside the EU, then proceed equally seamlessly into the UK.  After the new year when our "oven ready" trade deals kick in, anybody's guess.

Based on very recent experience (27th) problems have already started....
