WW1 signal flag(s)
« on: January 08, 2023, 04:58:28 pm »

Hi everyone

After a rubbish couple of days not modelling due to having to fix the boat transport aka the van! Failed its MOT and then on its way back the power steering packed up. So Dad and I have been spending the weekend repairing the van ready for its MOT on Monday. Fingers crossed :-))

Anyway, getting back to modelling this evening I’m trying to work out what signal flags would have been used/raised to give the signal ‘general chase’.

This was the flag signal given by Sturdee at the beginning of the Battle of The Falkland Islands 1914 onboard HMS Invincible. I would like to recreate this on my model but have no idea which flags I would need. Does anyone know what flags are needed? I hope to get the correct signal made by Mike Allsop aka flag man but I don’t know what I need. Any help would be most gratefully received.

Hi Ray

Many thanks, I don’t know why I didn’t think of checking with Wikipedia. I went old school and was looking through my Admiralty Seaman manuals but didn’t check the obvious place.
I’ll get that sent to Mike as I’ve got several flags and signals I’d like made. :-))

Happy to help  :-)

Not sure what is meant by (outdated) on '2' flag though.... Perhaps 'no longer used'?

I think the '2' could be in the wrong flag system for WW1 RN - I think it might be in modern nato on Wikipedia - I would check the manual. I guess the letters were the same but the flags different?

Hi James

That would be true, I’ve got a copy of the 1915 Manual of Seamanship Vol 1. Looking at the flags signals included in this volume it appears in the attached photo of Invincible at the Battle of the Falkland Islands that the signal for  the number 2, or yes/affirmative has just been raised from two positions, hard to tell in a black and white photograph which signal it is but at least I’ve got something to work with.

Ever thought that like the international code flag system, that the 2 refers to 2-Flag code then 2 in number flags. As code flags are ref by 1,2,3,4 and I have seen 5.

Somehow I doubt that Invincible is ULEZ compliant given the volume of the smoke!!  :-)

Actually on looking closer what is interesting is that most of the ships boats have been landed, other than the large steam launches

I take that back as the high flying cutters are in place on the aft superstructure, I mistook them for the steam launches!
