Paint lifting
« on: April 20, 2024, 04:46:15 pm »

Encountered something I have never suffered with before, the paint lifting in skins from my hull, so today hull rubbed down with wet n dry to see if that helps
Fleetscale 1/72 Leander Hull
Main colour BSI light weatherwoks Grey
Hull bottom Halfords red primer
Boot topping Halfords Matt black
Masking tap Frog low tack
I have used all the above for my warships and never had this problem, hull was pushed to remove any release agent.
So fingers crossed as will try again tomorrow
One paint applied left for 24 hours again this is my normal practice

Any suggestions please

Never used it never had a need but might try the 10mm as you 18 mm which is enough for 11 boat lengths😀. Think though Chris I used all the above items to paint Victorious at same time and not a bit of paint was lifted

Fleetscale fibre glass hull and yes it was cleaned and keyed as I normally do, and as I said the other hull I painted had no issues, never seen the paint lift like this in large skins

I had this happen to me, a fellow member said always use plastic primer. Gel coat is a plastic and had no trouble since. Halfords do a plastic Primer and garage bodyshop paint supply co as well, the cans are large in comparison to Halfords.

I have always found the Halfords standard white primer to have inferior adhesion to the grey and red versions. As Nemesis says, the white plastic primer is a lot better. The plastic versions of the grey and red are also probably better than the standard versions but I've had no problems with these. The plastic primers are more expensive.

I have been using the white plastic primer as a top coat with a coat of Halfords matt lacquer over it on my latest models. It looks good and seems to wear OK.

Hi Bob
I have had problems with Halfords white primer so have others.
A plastic primer might help ,I use Kunststoff primer by Mipa. In my town there is a shop that sells car paints for car body shops. I find his products that he selfs are cheaper better value for money and better than Halfords .
