« on: November 08, 2024, 04:48:33 pm »

Hi

Lost my screw off my Model Slipway Loyal Class Fleet Tender - seems to be a funny size - anyone know where I can get a replacement - Prop Shop sold me one but the boss in the centre of the screw stick out too far and hits the rudder post

Any help would be appreaciated.

TIA

Pat,
On the prop that you bought from Prop shop do you know what the tapped thread on the prop is and does it match the thread on the shaft ?
Also what is the diameter of the prop ?

Hi Pat
I do think that your problem is caused by too large a prop, 55mm is to much for an electric drive. I personally don't have much experience with electric drives so I would recommend that you put your questions on one of the first 3- threads  on this forum requesting somebody that has built your model and can tell you what prop to use.
If you go into the search box at the top of the page and type in ( Loyal Class Tender New Build ) there is a thread by Voyager with some pics that will help you.
One in particular that shows the prop on the model built which is much smaller. If the prop purchased from prop shop is unmarked they may be able to exchange it for a suitable prop, ask them for advice.

Also some pics of a prop that I made and if you have no joy and want to post the prop to me I can machine off the boss and put a thin lock nut on the shaft.
George.

A photo or two of Pat-k's set up and what is hitting where would save a whole lot of guesswork and working blind, and then one could make a full apraisal of that which is wrong and how to rectify it............

after all a picture speeks a thousand words.

George.
A 55mm prop is no way too big for electric power, just needs the correct motor. I have a 70mm 4 bladed prop on 2 model tugs, a Slipway Assurance class and Mountfleet ST Cruiser. The Assurance has a 6V MFA Torpedo 500 geared brushed motor and the Cruiser has a large low KV brushless outrunner motor designed for a 6S pack and running on a 2S pack. The outrunner has had to have the esc programmed to less than 100% as it was still too powerful for the hull. (The outrunner came from a flying model where it turned a large 3 bladed propeller at much higher revs than in the tug. The esc used is rather over the top as far as the maximum current capacity but is a type I have found gives good low speed running, off load you can see the prop blades as they turn.)

i concur with you jim, I ran the 71" Clyde lifeboat i built with 90mm 3 blade props that Prop Shop made specially for that boat, and had i put the proper large motors in to it the props would have been great for that boat.
However I scrimped on the motors and burnt them out..................so one has to be carefull matching motors to size of props plus boat and its displacement.

Well Pat there you have replies from 2- very experienced modellers using large dia props, just lets you see how much I know about electric propulsion and large props.
Please post a pic of your 55mm prop in position to see if it fouls the underside of the hull or the rudder support bracket
The type of motor , voltage and battery supply.

Perhaps Neil and Jim can help with prop size
If Prop shop will not exchange your prop for a smaller one I can still machine off the boss that fouls the rudder and make a thin lock nut to go on the shaft.

From the original post the prop diameter is not at issue as it is replacing the original with one of the same size. What is the issue is the shape of the prop hub as the new one appears to have a longer conical section of the hub behind the blades making it too long to fit in the prop opening. Getting an alternative with a shorter hub would be a fix but it shouldn't be too hard to file down the hub to make it shorter leaving the hub flattened at the rear, perhaps not so good for looks but will work well and can't be seen when in the water.

Hi , I had the same issue with a model that required a steam prop, prop shop made a prop for me without the bulbous end that did not protrude further than
the blades if you contact them they will make a prop to your requirements ,

Solved the problem Prop Shop made me one without the bulbous bit sticking out to hit the rudder shaft and also gone for a smaller prop
