After doing some playing about in the garage to keep the 50mm props I would run her on 6 volts initially and if she isn't fast enough go for 12 volts.

Goodness sake DON'T be CONNED like I was by him to buy his Buller motors they were POO POO would not rev much above 2000rpm ended up having to buy a proper motor which incidentally was cheaper and far superior.Try giving Red Bank Models a ring he is on this forum as winnergaz he sells Protech far better than Model Motors direct. This is a personal opinion don't believe me then pm either Welsh Druid or Robert Davies they both saw the patheticness of Alistairs motor even on 24v

Thanks Stavros, MMD does sound to be a little slow running, I`ll take a look at redbank. My main concern is postage, as some are cheap but then hit you for six with postage.
And thanks to others for comments, it is always nice & encouraging to receive compliments from anyone, especially when some of you have so much experience.

Talking of esc's, does anyone know if \ where the H Wing (otherwise may be known as Hobby Wing) brushless esc's can be obtained in the UK?

I have a hand held Tachometer which I use to check ALL my motors.

I do most as free running in conjunction with a voltmeter/ammeter.
For a direct comparison between motors the free running speed is a good start point.
I usually test with a coupling end on the motor.
To apply load I just grab the coupling, being careful of course and read speed and current.
It will only give a reasonable guide but does me.
I just use my "vast experience of prop loadings" ( that means just guess ) and grab it till it  it loads up.
It does depend on prop size and pitch, but this does give a reasonable guide to the motors performance and tells immediately if say, a 545 is a plodder or screamer.
